Improved performance of Little Snitch Configuration when “combine rules” is enabled. Little Snitch 4 Mind this chatter Automatic Silent Mode Switching Absolutely. Every now and then I have to click a few buttons, but that's OK. I like knowing what installed programs are doing. Bottom line: Little Snitch is not only a great firewall application, it's educational and fun to use.

I tried an earlier version of this and was a bit disappointed by the (apparent?) lack of information regarding these connections from applications, since there's so much going on on OS X and it's hard to tell what's legitimate and what isn't. It would be great if we could record traffic on a per-application/process basis and display it comfortably, or even have some built-in heuristics to identify common tasks like "Firefox update check" or "iCloud authentication".
Little Snitch will not stop showing confirmation messages for certain programs that make continuous use of the Internet, so you'll need to authorize their connection from all ports in order to use Little Snitch at the same time as those applications.

i used littleflocker for a few months and, while it worked really well, it slowed my machine down sooo much. perhaps the newer releases perform better.
Zero Maintenance – Once the firewall is installed, you can forget all about it. It is always on and needs no attention from you.
The software itself is definitely worth it, but I would recommend against buying it unless you are enthusiastic about using it. As you have seen yourself, the amount of knowledge, experience and work it requires is extensive. A single process (an application can contain multiple processes) can have dozens of connections and there are well over hundreds of processes on a ‘clean’ system that could trigger LS. This number seems to be only most obvious signs are that the connection comes from a process that is not installed in a system location and that you don’t recognise as software you installed yourself. Malware likes to install itself into hidden locations, which you would be able to spot in this way. However, it is also common for malware to conceal itself by using Apple's nomenclature, so mistakes are easily made. The URL or IP address can be suspicious too, as well as the port. You will find that even many Apple processes will connect to seemingly random hostnames (e.g. for iCloud) and obscure IP addresses. The number of connection requests you will receive will quickly lead to fatigue and sloppiness.
